We have made a lacquer version of Jinhao Dadao 9019 fountain pen

Hello everyone, many of you have already started working. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a great start to the new year. Today I’d like to introduce you to the Jinhao 9019, a large-lacquer version that we customized ourselves.

We used a burgundy 9019 and applied a layer of red lacquer to the outside of the barrel. The other accessories, such as the clip, ring, and nib, are exactly the same as the original Jinhao. Because we applied the lacquer first and then sent the barrel back to Jinhao, they helped us install these accessories.

Why did we choose this pen as our first large-lacquer fountain pen? There are several reasons.

First of all, we do have plans to develop some large-lacquer fountain pens. Therefore, we found a national-level lacquerware inheritor to help us control the production process related to lacquer. Although he is a national-level master, he has never made fountain pens before. To this end, we need several batches to conduct some process testing and process matching.

Secondly, the Jinhao 9019 is relatively large in size and is naturally suitable for making a large-lacquer pen. The large size will make it look more atmospheric and more domineering and beautiful.

Thirdly, the pen’s ink absorber is very large, and the ink storage capacity is almost the same as that of some piston fountain pens, which is more friendly to students who have requirements for ink storage capacity. We also chose Jinhao’s latest heartthrob nib, which meets some of the demand in terms of both stunts and aesthetics.

Fourth, the most important original Jinhao Avenue 9019, its pen barrel is made of plastic using injection molding technology. If you have used Platinum 3776, you will know that this plastic pen barrel is very easy to produce some scratches after prolonged use. These scratches are very fine and difficult to remove. After we applied a layer of lacquer on the surface of the pen barrel, the hardness and wear resistance of this lacquer product are much better than that of plastic products. That is to say, after you use it for a long time, the barrel will become brighter and brighter, and the longer you use it, the more texture it will have. Therefore, making this lacquer fountain pen is not just a gimmick, but it is indeed to meet some functional needs.

Because this is the first attempt, there are indeed some shortcomings. The specific reasons may be reflected in all aspects of communication and coordination and process cooperation, but for this pen, there are mainly two places that are not perfect.

The first is the issue of the pen barrel thread. At that time, Jinhao sent me the cap and the outer casing of the pen barrel, but not the pen grip. Then the end of the year was tight, so I could only apply lacquer to the pen cap and pen barrel, and the pen grip was not painted. There is a thread here on the pen barrel. Of course, the thread can also be painted, and then the thread can be polished out later, which is also possible, but it is more troublesome. Considering the low cost of the Jinhao Avenue itself, it may not be worth it to spend so much effort. The current solution is to cover the threads with masking paper when applying the paint, and then remove it later. Therefore, the threads do not look so beautiful. This can be further improved later if necessary.

The second is the problem of the clip assembly. Because this pen itself is not designed to have a margin for painting, after painting, the opening for installing the clip on the pen cap is a bit tight when installing the clip, and it may cause the paint surface at the connection to produce fine serrations. This is also because many large-lacquer fountain pens do not have clips. Of course, this problem can be improved later.

Because this is our first batch of lacquer fountain pens, the purpose is mainly to test the process and process matching, and also to give more people an opportunity to get in touch with lacquer fountain pens. The price of this batch of fountain pens will be relatively low, which can be considered as an experience.

At the same time, I have two more lacquer samples in my hand. The material used is hard rubber. The hard rubber material itself is much more expensive than the 9019 lacquer version above. I will see if it can be used on higher-end products later. Here is a picture of it.
