Madagascar Ironwood — A Refined Red Hardwood
Known in China as Xiaoye Hongtan, this wood belongs to the ironwood family rather than true red sandalwood. It is a dense, hard, reddish-brown hardwood mainly sourced from Africa.
Its fine grain, warm color, and visible texture give it a look close to traditional rosewood-style furniture, which is why it is often used as a refined alternative in high-end furniture, carving, beads, and decorative objects.
The wood feels solid and smooth in the hand, with good strength, wear resistance, and natural durability. Some pieces show calm straight grain, while others reveal darker lines and richer contrast.
It is not classified as Chinese national-standard hongmu, but it remains a valued premium hardwood: practical, elegant, and understated.
